SUGGESTIONS FOR SLOGAN:

This isn't jumping the gun; this is great!

I think maybe "Just do it" should be the organizational motto. Coordinate with other folks as needed, but when you see something that needs done then "just do it".

Also BTW, I'm personally up to my elbows working with Larry and Karen on the Maiser move, so whatever you do please don't wait on me. If you need resources from RootsWeb, though, beat on me until I serve them up. -B

Subject: Mottoes, et al

... I still find Internet International Genealogical (or Genealogy?) Society difficult to say as opposed to: International Internet Genealogical Society, but this Puget Sounder (Washington state for the U.S.-geographically impaired) suffers from a speech impediment caused by an Oklahoma childhood and young adulthood in Germany (ever hear German with an Okie twang?)

I have been thinking about mottoes and came up with the following for consideration: Linking Our Lines, Linking Families, Linking Lineages, Global Connections

Dr. Leverich's letter that begins, "Based on interest expressed by many folks, Rootsweb wuold like to sponsor the creation of a nonprofit Internet International Genealogical Society with the following mission:" was published in yesterday's issue of Myra Vanderpool Gormley's and my "Missing Links: A Weekly Newsletter for Genealogists," and distributed to nearly 4,000 subscribers, some of whom are in interesting places like Australia and South Africa. Myra and I hope this will help to get the ball rolling.

Perhaps Latin would be appropriate for use with the logo? Pax et Familia? Julie Case, Julie_Case@prodigy.com, Julie_Case@prodigy.net

Regarding the name ... International Internet Genealogy Network or Worldwide Internet Genealogy Society sound good. What about a combination of the two? Worldwide Internet Geneology Network.

And regarding slogans: I don't really like mottoes, etc, but do think a line explaining what this is all about would be nice. In that vein, the line Exploring Our Global Heritage would be nice. Maybe even something a little longer and more descriptive ... I vote "forget a motto, but do have a descriptive line".

I'm not serious about this, but notice that GI with suitable changes of endings could stand for Genealogy International in German, French, Spanish and Italian as well as English, whereas IIGS would require rearrangement of the acronym in three of these languages, and I suppose a G for Gesellschaft or maybe V for Verein in German, instead of S for Society (Socie'te', etc.). :-) ??? My guess is that "internet" came from "intercommunication" (or possibly "interconnecting") and "network". As I recall, "internet" was preceded by "Internet", which was preceded by "BITNET", which was preceded by "USENET", which was preceded by "ARPANET". And now "internet", and "WWW" or "the web", have become confounded, not to mention complex. By the way, is an inter-gnat a bug on the internat-ional inter-net?

Gordon Fisher gfisher@shentel.net

In a word no. International communications exists without the internet and the internet can exist without being international. I do not believe we are saying the same thing, perhaps a joining of the two. Internet in of itself does not break out to mean INTERnational NETwork, if that is where this thought is going, I do not believe it has ever meant that. This society is international in scope, utilizes the internet to accomplish that task and it pertains to genealogy. Just my thoughts on this.

GLOBAL stills *sounds* better than INTERNATIONAL to me. Has anyone put up a FAQs page yet? I've tried to catch every notice, but might have missed one in the avalanche. Looking at a couple info pages: The non-graphic ones are better, quicker, easier to read than those with frames. My 2c. Lee Huff, leehuff@connecti.com

The concept is fantastic and I eagerly await the actual project but in the meantime I think this is way over my head...how can I unsubscribe. I commend all you talented folks!

After reading all day in between coffee and bathroon breaks, I will cast my vote GIGS and I think you all are doing a fine job at steering this monster down the highway. Keep up the good work. Isn't it a good thing you all arn't in the same room ?

How about keeping the name of this group, IIGS, as a tribute to the founder(s) who came up with the name.

Daryl, dlytton@primenet.com

Sounds good. Speakers of other languages can just use the acronym itself, either letter by letter, or pronounced in their phonetics. (In the USA scientists speark of CERN (which they customarily pronounce as a word, "sairn" in English phonetics), without, in many cases, thinking of it as the Centre Europe'enne de Recherche Nucle'aire.)

Admittedly "eegs" (English phonetics again -- in generalized continental European phonetics, "iigs" itself would probably do) doesn't sound as familiar as "wigs" or "gigs" (short for "gigobytes" or slang for "engagements", rhymes with "jigs", "pigs", etc.) to English-speakers, but "eegs" would be distinctive. (And recall that the letter "w" is scarce in Romance languages, and that "gigs" might get pronounced "jigs", etc.)

In fact, thinking about it, I've grown quite fond of the sound of "eegs". On ward and outward, IIGS; !

Oh yeah! I dig DIGS!

I like GIGS. But whatever it's called as long as it grows and becomes an influence throughtout the world and accomplishes the main task of bringing together in some fashion or form the 100,000+ projected internet genealogists then all the better.

Subject: Re: GI instead of IIGS, etc. (2nd take)

You could substitute Association or Organization for Society since this is somewhat different from a traditional Genealogical Society.

IIGS also is the name for my trusty old Apple computer. Anyway, that was my first thought when seeing this abbreviation. My preference is for an abbreviation which makes a word.
