The International Internet Genealogical Society was created on May 16, 1997 when Dr. Brian Leverich shared his vision with us in an e-mail letter that was addressed to the members of Rootsweb.

Joanne Rabun posted the first IIGS™ Organization Chart to her website on May 17, 1997.

The first Webmasters Site was created by Joe Reynolds on May 17, 1997.

The International Internet Genealogical Society's first mission statement was place on the World Wide Web on May 19, 1997.

The name "International Internet Genealogical Society" was selected from a list of 35 names on May 21, 1997. It's interesting to note that the original name "Internet International Genealogical Society" that was suggested by Lorine Schulze (who also suggested International Internet Genealogical Society) and used in Dr. Brian Leverich's public announcement if the IIGS™ was never listed in the entries to be voted on. "

On June 4th, 1997 the official vote was over and our current Logo was selected by the members from a choice of 16 different entries.
