Editor - Penny Bonnar
- Understanding Copyright and Its Applications to the Information Age
- This month the IIGS Newsletter joins the United States Internet Genealogical Society publication, Signal, and the Brown Family Genealogical Society in the promotion of ethics and standards among genealogists who make use of online resources. Although the Brown Family Genealogical Society Newsletter is not online, one of the articles appearing in the publication this month was written by Barbara A. Brown, who is also an IIGS member. Ms. Brown's article is being simultaneously published in the April 1999 IIGS Newsletter.
- Restoring Ethics to Genealogy
- IIGS member Barbara Brown asks responsible genealogists to take a stand against the rise in sloppy genealogical practices which is due, in part, to the availability of resources on the Internet.
- Thievery in the Digital Age
- Penny Bonnar explains why plagiarism is considered the worst of all possible sins by writers and researchers.
- Time to Step Up to the Plate
- Editor Penny Bonnar believes the time has come for online genealogical organizations to establish standards or guidelines to help genealogists avoid some of the pitfalls of digital genealogical research. Toward that end readers are encouraged to visit the USIGS Signal where they can learn about the rebirth of the joint USIGS-IIGS GEnealogical Data Interchange and Storage Standard (GEDISS).
- Internet Resources: Copyright and Plagiarism
- A list of helpful resources to answer questions on copyright, plagiarism and other online issues.
- The Frugal Genealogist
- Ardis Parshall's advice for genealogists on a budget first appeared on the Rootsweb GEN-EDITOR list and is reprinted here with her permission.
- Addition to the Language Bar
- IIGS welcomes Anu Erringer to the Translation Team.
- Help Wanted
- A classified section created for IIGS teams which need volunteers. Other Internet-based genealogical organizations also are welcome to participate. Contact the editor.
