IIGS Newsletter - March 1999
The IIGS Projects Registry Team has announced that its pages now have an application form for on-line registration of projects. The Project Registry pages can be found at http://www.iigs.org/projects_registry/index.htm.en. There are also Dutch and Swedish translations of these pages.
The Team's mission is to let genealogists internationally know about projects that will provide free access to genealogical data via the Internet. We particularly aim to support project owners who need help in finding volunteers by publicizing their needs and the skills required. The Projects Register also serves as a source for volunteers to find where they can be of service. Where we can, the team also provides advice on project start up. A preliminary guide of Do's and Don'ts for project owners prepared by a team member has been made available. As we gain more experience on what is asked for we plan to expand this guide.
By including projects from many countries, we believe we are providing a service to genealogists by alerting them to important data that will become available to them in the future via the Internet. The IIGS Projects Register is for projects which are planned, in process, or others that may appear to be completed yet need more input to reach their pre-determined goal. Open-ended projects such as surname files are not included. It is also for projects that will be of interest to a significant part of the genealogical community. We are sorry but we must exclude family histories, as important as they are.
If you have a project you would like to have others know about or if you need volunteers and want to make that need known, register the project using the new on-line application form. If you want to volunteer, search the Projects Register for projects of interest to you - and don't wait, volunteer.
