Genealogy's Endangered
By Penny Bonnar, pbonnar@win.bright.net

The IIGS™ Newsletter announces a new feature and, we hope, a new service to genealogy. Each month the Newsletter hopes to publish notices of collections important to genealogists which appear to be endangered. Our purpose is simply to make genealogists aware of these endangered collections. IIGS™ is not soliciting letters, donations or anything else to these causes. Genealogists who choose to volunteer to help preserve these collections can contact the appropriate people. Please do NOT contact IIGS™.

Readers who are aware of endangered collections can send the information to the IIGS™ Newsletter editor at pbonnar@win.bright.net.

A NJBERGEN-L@rootsweb.com member advised fellow list members on Feb. 8, 1999, that the Bergen Historical Society (New Jersey) collection must find a new home by June 30. The Society has been searching for a new home for more than a year, but has had no luck. For information on how you can help their cause, contact:
Bob Griffin, President
Bergen County Historical Society

Archives and Heritage in Northumberland, United Kingdom (UK), also are in danger. According to information provided by UK genealogist Maureen Howes, the archives is under threat from redevelopment. Currently the archives in Morpeth are leased from the Castle Morpeth Borough Council. Lack of funding for repairs to a second archive site (an old World War II concrete bunker) adds to the already desperate situation in Northumberland.

A Northumblerand Genealogists Action Group has formed to try to find a solution to the problem. The group's primary aim is to safeguard the archives for future generations and it is working with local government authorities to accomplish this goal.

For more information about the Northumberland archives or to find out how you can help, contact Maureen Howes at KYLINS@aol.com.
