IRC: Your Connection to Genealogists Worldwide
By Barbara A. Brown, babrown@fast.net
What is amazing to discover about IRC is that people from all over the world are joining in to chat about genealogy. For those interested in connecting with researchers in other countries, it might help to know when they are likely to be online at #genealogy at iigs.org, the International Internet Genealogical Society's 24-hour chat line.

The following are my personal observations only. Please note that the times I indicate are Eastern Time Zone in the United States and Canada.

About 6 a.m., there are usually a couple of East Coast, United States and Canada, early risers; the night owls from Australia and New Zealand; and a couple of gentlemen from Germany who are logged on at their places of employment.

Around 9 a.m., the west coast, United States, early birds arrive. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., not very many people are on IRC.

After 2 p.m., and until early evening, Europeans join in and by 6 p.m., the east coast United States and Canada contingent starts joining.

The rush comes between 9 p.m. and midnight and after midnight, the west coast United States and Canada folks take over until the Australians and New Zealanders come on board.

So, if you wish to "try out" IRC, there are plenty of times to do so. If there are no channels open when you arrive, either start the general chat by typing: /join #genealogy or come back in a few minutes. If you start the channel, chances are you won't be alone in #genealogy for very long--someone always shows up.

If you like your online life more organized, visit the IIGS™ IRC page to view the list of scheduled chats.
