IIGS Newsletter - November 1998
Hiya everyone!
#iigs-ontario is a chat forum on the rootsweb server. You may have had the occasion to see our advertisements on the Ontario mailing lists.
We invite anyone with roots in Ontario to join us on Wednesday evenings at 9:00 EST.
The time 9:00 pm EST converts to
- 6:00 pm PDT (BC)
- 10:00 pm ADT (Maritimes)
- 1:00 GMT (Thursday morning)
- 2:00 BDT (Thursday morning)
For further conversions, please click "Schedule of Regular & Theme Meetings" on http://www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm.en and choose your time zone from the drop down menu.
What do we do on #iigs-ontario? We get together with regulars and not-so-regulars to chat about resources and surnames in Ontario. Some of our regulars include: Lori, Jem, Navcom, Wildfire, Chance and mc. We recently have welcomed some newcomers.
In the near future, we will be treated with a *special* Ontario Loyalist chat hosted by Lorine McGinnis Schulze aka "wildfire." Keep your ear to the ground and your eyes open for the actual date. Lorine is the well-known author of "The Van Slyke Family in America" and also is the creator of The Olive Tree Genealogy Homepage (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/).
What have we done in the past? There have been three structured evenings with the following subjects to help new researchers get started
You may view these meetings at ftp://www.iigs.org/pub/iigs/archives/IRC/logs/
- A little History & Geography of Ontario & Quebec (February 18, 1998),
- Ontario Birth, Marriage & Death Records (March 4, 1998), and
- Ontario Censuses (March 18,1998).
If you would like to host a special chat on your particular expertise in Ontario, please don't be shy as I'm sure everyone would just love it!!
If you are new to tracing your roots in Ontario, please let us know what you'd be interested in learning about and we will do our best to help you out.
To learn about IRC (Internet Relay Chat) go to http://www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm.en
There you'll find links to download IRC software (just click on "IRC software").
For PC users, "mIRC" is the most commonly used software on our server. For MAC users, "Ircle" is the most commonly used software on our server.
Step by step instructions for mIRC & Ircle are at http://www.iigs.org/irc/irclinks.htm.en
The server is open 24 hours a day for genealogy. Many other scheduled meetings exist. Please check out "Schedule of Regular & Theme Meetings" at http://www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm.en
The common room/channel that is open is #genealogy. You're quite welcome and encouraged to visit this room. There are quite a few regulars who visit #genealogy and I'm sure that someone there would be more than willing to help you to get accustomed to your new software and the many things that you can do with it.
