Why Genealogy? -
a continuing feature
compiled by Gloria Holback, Feature Editor
What is it that drives us to research our ancestors? Are we just curious about those family members who lived long before we did and what life was like for them? Share your reasons with others by sending your story to gholback@gte.net.
There is a natural tendency for most of us who are living to influence others, or to be influenced by others around us. To think about those who are dead, and especially labor to find out about them is a most mysterious study.
In 1989 my father's brother died and while at the funeral, I mentioned to some cousins that the family should get together for another reason than this.
When I was a little girl about 8 or 10 years old, my grandfather whom I loved very much, would take me with him as he went around to different old cemeteries in the county where we lived.
How can we not be subjective when we are researching ourselves? I don't want to be an apologist for the sinners in my past--lord knows they only proved themselves human, not saints.
Letters to the Editor - New Feature!
compiled by Wally Garchow, Feature Editor
A brand new section for people to submit letters to be viewed by the newsletter readership. Flames will be returned to the sender unanswered. Your identity can be 'hidden' behind initials if you wish. Only one or two submissions will be used each month. Send your letter for publication to the Feature Editor at wally@calweb.com, with the subject line "Letters to the Editor."
Perhaps when I read more, I'll be able to summon up a little enthusiasm for the project. Right now, the little I know about it leaves me cold. There are a few reasons I feel that way.
