Since 1989, land records in Ontario, Canada, have been endangered artifacts! After the decision was made to automate our land registry offices, the pre-1867 documents were taken by the Archives of Ontario and the post-1868 records were scheduled for destruction.
Land records in Ontario, Canada, contain the largest source of wills for perhaps the earliest periods. Many, many wills were never probated and therefore never ended up in the surrogate court records.
What is it that drives us to research our ancestors? Are we just curious about those family members who lived long before we did and what life was like for them? Share your reasons with others by sending your story to gholback@gte.net.
