Genealogical Tools

Ancestry and Familytreemaker sites are commercial sites for a monthly or annual fee, but both sites have excellent on-line libraries well worth the fee if you can afford it. Three books a day are being added to these libraries and at this writing, nearly a thousand genealogical books are available on each site. The sites like GenConnect that are associated with Rootsweb are, of course, all free sites for those who cannot afford to take advantage of the commercial sites.

U.S. Migratory Trails

If you are uncertain where your ancestors originated, it helps to spend some time studying the migratory trails used by the pioneers as they settled the United States.

U.S. History

No genealogical research is complete without some knowledge of the history of the era in which your ancestors lived. To make your family history more than just a collection of names and to locate unknown ancestors, you need to study how the country developed and the areas as they were settled. A good start is the history of our country.

US Historical Documents - an outstanding collection of historical documents placed on-line by the University of Oklahoma Law School including the The Magna Carta(1215); Letter from Christopher Columbus to the King & Queen of Spain (1490's), The Iroquois Constitution; The Mayflower Compact, Charter of Massachusetts Bay and many more.
