Census Records

Census returns are varied. The first general Ontario census was taken in 1842, 1848 and 1850 but not all survive. There are scattered returns for the time periods prior to 1842 but each area took its own census and researchers should consult the book of available census returns found in any public library of Ontario, or at the Archives, to determine what years are available in their area of interest. Some areas have census records as early as 1783. Censuses up to 1850 are heads of household only but do give extra information such as how many children, and what ages they are.

The censuses after 1851 which are available to the public were taken in 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. They provide information on all household members - name, age, gender, country of birth, religion, ethnic origin, occupation, marital status and education.

Court Records

Court records in Ontario date from 1789. Many records are avialable on microfilm at the Archives. A court of Probate for all of upper Canada was established in 1793 and surrogate courts for the four existing districts were also created. In 1858 the Probate court and District Surrogate court were abolished. County Surrogate Courts were established in their place.
