The IIGS IRC Net is graciously provided by RootsWeb
***FOR THE IIGS*** and has been formed for the promotion of genealogical activities
***WITHIN THE GENEALOGY COMMUNITY***. The use of the IIGS IRC Net for commercial purposes is
expressly forbidden without the prior consent of both RootsWeb and IIGS.
The Rootsweb Net is reserved for genealogy channels and such other channels as may be deemed
relevant by the IIGS IRC Team:
the IIGS IRC Team welcomes all parties interested in using the services of this server for
genealogy and genealogy related topics;
IIGS IRC channels are created under the authority of the IIGS IRC Team. The IIGS IRC Co-Team
Leaders; the IIGS IRC Team; or the IIGS IRC
Liaison should be contacted before setting up a
channel; and,
non IIGS members should be encouraged to join the IIGS.

STANDARD, SPECIALTlY and ONE-TIME CHANNELS
Authority for the creation of a standard, specialty, and one-time channels rests with the IIGS
IRC Co-Team Leaders, in consultation with the IIGS IRC Team.
One-time, temporary, channels may be created at any time, without Team approval, so long as they
fall within the guidelines set forth in this Policy manual and they do not conflict with any existing
channels; and,
Unauthorized channels (as in i. above) may be closed at no notice by the authority of the IIGS
IRC Team.
The IIGS IRC Team shall maintain one standard #genealogy channel for general chat. This
channels should be kept open if at all possible, even if only a topic is set and there is a pointer
to another active channel.
Specialty channels are formed as and when required to accomplish specific tasks designated by the
IIGS IRC Team:
the #irchelp, #ircteam, and #irctraining channels (or any variation thereof) are reserved
exclusively for the use of the IIGS IRC Team.

THEME CHANNELS
Any individual is welcome to open a genealogy related theme channel under the understanding that
the IIGS IRC Team is the approving agency and, also, that the IIGS IRC Team reserves the right to
restrict channel names where conflicts may exist. Channel names will be approved on a first come,
first served, basis.
Approved theme channels shall operate within the general netiquette guidelines outlined in Part IV
of this Policy Manual. The channel host/hostess may set additional guidelines but these must not be
in conflict with those set by the IIGS IRC Team. These additions will require IIGS IRC Team approval.
Each theme channel shall have at least one official channel host/hostess whose name and e-mail
address shall be published on the IIGS IRC web page.

CHANNEL OPERATOR STATUS
Operator status (often called "ops") on most networks is loosely interpreted to
mean "power and control". By default, on the IIGS IRC Net, op status is taken to mean "acceptance
and trust". We recognize, of course, that op status does convey a measure of power and control to
the grantee and, accordingly, should not be given until:
the individual has been briefed and has demonstrated an understanding of
the uniqueness of op status within the IIGS IRC;
the individual has displayed a genealogical interest and an intent to actively participate in
the channel activities; and,
the individual is known and recognised by the community (hostmask, rather than nickname(s),
should be used for recognition purposes).
How then do I go about granting op status to friends, family, and visitors? Easy as pie:
simply monitor the individual when he/she enters the room and grant op status:
when you have verified their hostmask and determined they are know to you; or,
when you recognise the individual nickname from previous conversations
and have verified, through casual conversation, that this individual is, indeed, the party represented
by the nickname (genealogical interest and commonly used, and recognised, alias/pop-ups are often a
good indicator); or,
if you are not sure of the individuals proper identity, do not grant op status. Equally, do not
simply ignore this individual: engage him/her in conversation and attempt to confirm their identity
and trustworthiness. In other words, do all the good and proper things that we should all, as hosts,
do whenever a visitor arrives at our channel door.
Op status within theme channels is entirely at the discretion of the channel Host. A
generous ops policy is encouraged. Selected individuals, to be made known to the channel Host
by a IIGS IRC Co-Team Leader, must always be given ops when present in the channel (usually SYSAdmins,
Co-Team Leaders, and IRCops).

"MODERATED" CHANNEL
When the channel mode is set to "moderated" only those with op status have a "voice"
automatically. "Voice" may be given to those without ops by using the mode command +v. Only
text entered by those with "voice" is seen in the channel. In the rare instance that an IIGS IRC
on-line meeting must be controlled in this manner, the channel greeter will make this known to
each meeting visitor as they enter the channel.

ARCHIVING LOGS & MINUTES OF MEETINGS
A log should be made of every IIGS IRC channel event:
the log may be edited by the channel host or submitted for archive unedited;
logs should be submitted for archive within 7 days of the event; and,
minutes should be kept of meetings that are not logged and should be posted to the archive
within 7 days of the meeting.
the IIGS IRC Archives are the official
repository for channel logs and other material deemed necessary to be stored.
