GENERAL

  1. Once you have auto-ops up and running, you should be careful about oping people manually. Looks *can* be deceiving, and that person may not be who you think he/she is. Since IIGS™ IRC Net does not register nicks, anyone may use any nick they want. Auto-ops works using the parts of a users hostmask that should be constant. If a person you think *should* be oped and auto-ops does not do it, then you should start wondering why. If you have other ways of determining the identity of the person, use them. When in doubt, be conservative. Channel regulars will understand if you are cautious.
  2. A special thank-you goes out to the good folks over on the EFNet #genealogy channel for sharing their channel auto-ops policies with our IIGS™ IRC Team.

AUTO-OPS MANAGEMENT

  1. Auto-ops does require a certain amount of administration and coordination (usually one designated individual) but it is not rocket science and if properly managed it can be a very helpful tool. The IIGS™ IRC Team will manage the #genealogy channel auto-op list.
  2. The IIGS™ IRC Team member assigned to manage the auto-op list is charged to:
    1. validate all requests to add or remove users to the auto-op list;
    2. inform users of significant events that may impact on individual user hostmasks;
    3. maintain the 150 ban list;
    4. provide auto-op set-up assistance to mIRC users;
    5. manage other IIGS™ IRC channel ops within this same list if requested by the theme channel host/hostess; and,
    6. send update auto-op lists to channel users via e-mail.
  3. When a user joins the IIGS™ IRC #genealogy channel they will receive auto-ops if:
    1. one or more of those with ops is using the auto-ops feature;
    2. the individuals hostmask is listed within that individuals auto-ops list; and,
    3. the individuals working hostmask matches that contained in the auto-ops list.

AUTO-OPS SET-UP

  1. To set up auto-ops within the current version of mIRC, users must:
    1. receive the current auto-op list from the IIGS™ IRC Team auto-ops coordinator;
    2. use WIN95 Notepad or any word processor to open this file; highlight the auto-op list; and copy this list into the WIN95 clipboard;
    3. open mIRC and select "options" from the "file" menu;
    4. select the tab labeled "control";
    5. click on the small circle in front of the "auto-op" section;
    6. paste the auto-op list from the clipboard into the mIRC auto-op window;
    7. make sure the box next to the word "active" is checked;
    8. check the box at the bottom that is labeled "random delay auto-op"; and,
    9. exit the mIRC options and you're up and running with the auto-ops list.

AUTO-OPS USER ADD/REMOVE NAMES

  1. IIGS™ IRC users are at liberty to add to or remove from their own auto-op list. Try to use as few wildcards as possible, to cut down on the possibility of accidentally oping imposters. When in doubt, don't be afraid to ask questions of other IIGS™ IRC regulars. IIGS™ IRC users are strongly encouraged to pass these changes along to the IIGS™ IRC Team auto-op manager. To set up your copy of mIRC so that you can auto-add/delete user hostmasks, you should cut and paste the following three lines into the top of your mIRC pop-up menu:
Add to AUTO-OP:/auto $1 #genealogy 3
Remove from AUTO-OP:/auto -r $1 #genealogy 3
-
  1. After you have added a new user to your list (or updated an old user for a changed hostmask) you should go into the auto-ops section of mIRC and add a comment line immediately above this new hostmask line and including:
    1. the real name of the user; and,
    2. the e-mail of the user.

AUTO-OPS 150 BAN LIST

  1. "Spit" happens, as my kids often remind me. Our channels will be hacked. It is only common sense to take advantage of built-in mIRC protection features where they exist. The auto-op list also contains a 150 ban list which you can add to your copy of mIRC if you so choose.
  2. To create a ban list you should:
    1. receive the current auto-op list from the IIGS™ IRC Team auto-ops list coordinator;
    2. use WIN95 Notepad or any word processor to open this file; highlight the auto-op ban list; and copy this list into the WIN95 clipboard;
    3. open mIRC and select "remote" from the "tools" menu;
    4. select the tab labeled "users";
    5. paste the auto-op ban list from the clipboard into the users window;
    6. select the "remote" tab and add the following line;
on +150:JOIN:#genealogy:/ban $chan $nick 3 | /kick $chan $nick Bye...
    1. make sure "events", from the Listen menu, is checked; and,
    2. in order to add your own 150 bans you merely have to add the trouble-maker's ID to this list using the proper hostmask format.
