What is a Web Ring?
A web ring is a way of linking a group of related sites, so that visitors can easily move from
one site to another. The sites are linked in a ring so that a person could (if the ring was small
enough) travel through all of the sites and back to the first one simply by following the web ring
links.
What is special about the IIGS Members Web Ring?
The IIGS Members Web Ring is special because it is only for IIGS members pages; those
members are from around the world and all are interested in genealogy. It is hoped that by using this ring, people will visit many sites that they would not otherwise know existed.
Why would I want to join a web ring?
There are various reasons for joining a web ring; it brings more people to your web page, it
can take you to sites you never knew existed and it fills up the white space at the bottom of your
page :~)
Who can join the IIGS Members Web Ring?
Any member of IIGS who owns or hosts a non-commercial, genealogy related web page may join the IIGS
Members Web Ring.
I would like to join the IIGS Members Web Ring, but I am
not a member of IIGS, can I still join the ring?
We're sorry, until you are a member of IIGS you cannot join the IIGS Members Web Ring,
there are no exceptions to this. Membership in IIGS is free, so the best thing would be for you to join the IIGS by visiting the
membership page at
http://www.iigs.org/membership/explain.htm
I am a member of IIGS, but my genealogy page is a commercial venture, can I still join the ring?
We're sorry, but in keeping with the IIGS philosophy of free genealogy access for all, we are not accepting any commercial sites for the IIGS Web Ring. If you feel that your site is a "border-line commercial site" please contact us at ringmaster-iigsring@webring.org and we will review your request.
How can I join the IIGS Members Web Ring?
The first step towards joining the IIGS Members Web Ring is to fill in the Web Ring application form
I was unable to join using the
web ring application, do I need a forms capable browser to join the web ring?
No, if you are unable to use the form to join, you may write to ringmaster-iigsring@webring.org for further help.
My homepage has all my hobbies on it, only one part of my site is for genealogy, which url should I use for the ring?We would prefer that you register the url for the page with your genealogy information on it ie.www.server.com/family/hobbies/genealogy.html
I have more than one homepage, which one should I include in the ring?If you have more than one genealogy based homepage you have a couple of options. If all of your pages are linked from one main page, you could enter the main page in the ring, but if your pages are all on different servers, or are not linkable from one central page, or the content of your pages
differs greatly, you could enter each page in the IIGS Members Web Ring. You are not limited in the number of sites you enter, but each site must show the HTML code and we ask that you exercise good judgement. Write to ringmaster-iigsring@webring.org if you are unsure.
I am already a member of another web ring, can I still join the IIGS Web Ring?
IIGS Web Ring has no restrictions on the number of rings you join, but some others do, so it would be advisable to check with any other rings of which you are a member.
Where do I put the HTML code? You will need to place the code in a prominent place on the page that you specified in your request to join the IIGS Members Web Ring. In order for you to join the ring we must be able to find the code on
your page.
